YNW Melly’s request for pre-trial release remains unresolved after a Broward County judge postponed ruling indefinitely during a hearing on April 30. The decision means Melly will continue to be held in jail as he awaits his retrial scheduled for January 2027.
Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, has been in custody since February 2019 facing two first-degree murder charges connected to the October 2018 deaths of his YNW collective members Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams and Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr.
His defense team argued that evidence related to alleged gang ties should not be introduced, claiming it could unfairly prejudice the jury. Prosecutors countered, stating that such evidence is relevant to motive and intent.
This upcoming retrial follows a previous trial in July 2023 that ended in a mistrial after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict following three days of deliberation. Melly faces the same potential consequences, including life without parole or the death penalty, if convicted.
Melly’s co-defendant, Cortlen “YNW Bortlen” Henry, has already accepted a plea deal and received a 10-year prison sentence, leaving prosecutors’ case heavily dependent on other evidence and witness testimony. The court continues to review motions regarding whether statements from Henry can be used against Melly.
At this time, the judge has not indicated when a bond ruling will be issued, keeping Melly in custody as pre-trial proceedings continue.
