John Cena recently reflected on the legendary “OVW Four” era while discussing WWE’s current wave of rising young talent and the future of the company’s championship scene.
Speaking in a recent interview with CBS Sports and SHAK Wrestling, Cena explained that the long-lasting success of his generation may have unintentionally delayed opportunities for younger stars because top spots remained occupied for so many years.
The iconic “OVW Four” — consisting of John Cena, Randy Orton, Batista, and Brock Lesnar — became one of the most successful developmental classes in wrestling history after all four eventually evolved into major WWE main-event stars.
Cena acknowledged that their incredible longevity created an unusual situation in WWE.
“We had an anomaly of longevity and success, and that takes up time and spots,” Cena explained.
The 16-time world champion pointed out that while Batista has retired and his own full-time WWE chapter is ending, Randy Orton remains one of the final active stars from that era still consistently competing at the top level.
According to Cena, as that generation gradually steps away, newer talent will naturally begin taking over the spotlight.
“New performers are gonna get those spots,” Cena said. “Those are going to go to the most seasoned performers that connect with the audience.”
While some fans have questioned whether WWE currently lacks very young world champions, Cena pushed back on that criticism and praised the company’s developing roster.
“We are loaded with youth, speed, and talent,” he added.
During the interview, Cena also singled out one newer WWE name he has quickly become a fan of — Mason Rook.
The rising NXT talent recently debuted after building a reputation on the British independent wrestling scene, and Cena admitted he already enjoys the crowd reaction surrounding the newcomer.
“He’s big. He’s bad. He’ll bodyslam your dad,” Cena joked while referencing Rook’s growing popularity.
Mason Rook has rapidly become one of the more talked-about recent additions to the NXT roster, with many fans already viewing him as a potential future breakout star.
As WWE continues transitioning into its next generation, Cena’s comments highlight how the company may soon enter a completely new era once the final remaining stars from the OVW Four generation fully step away from the spotlight.
