A Kentucky man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say a domestic argument escalated into a horrifying case involving threats, violence, and severe abuse of two family dogs.
According to Louisville-area reports, 37-year-old Bobby Atkinson was arrested after allegedly threatening his wife with a handgun before her two dogs were later discovered badly burned inside the family home.
Investigators say the disturbing incident began after Atkinson’s wife allegedly confronted him about another woman she found at their Louisville residence.
Court documents cited by local outlets state that the argument intensified as the woman prepared her children for school. Authorities allege Atkinson armed himself with a handgun during the confrontation and threatened her while standing nearby.
According to the arrest citation referenced in local reports, Atkinson allegedly told the woman that if they did not share a daughter together, he would shoot her.
Fearing for her safety, the woman reportedly left the home with her children and sought an emergency protective order.
However, the situation allegedly took an even darker turn later that day.
According to investigators, the woman returned home after receiving information connected to Atkinson and another woman. When she entered the residence, she reportedly heard smoke alarms sounding and immediately smelled smoke inside the house.
Authorities say one of the dogs later emerged from underneath a bed covered in ash and suffering visible burn injuries. Reports state both dogs — identified as Brooklyn and Seven — appeared to have been exposed to some type of accelerant.
The animals were transported to Louisville Metro Animal Services for emergency treatment.
Police arrested Atkinson later that afternoon.
According to online jail records and local news reports, he now faces multiple charges, including animal torture, animal cruelty, terroristic threatening, and menacing.
During his arraignment, Atkinson pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
Local reports state his bond was initially set at $20,000 before later being increased to $50,000.
The woman involved in the case later told local media she remains fearful for both her family’s safety and the wellbeing of the surviving animals.
Animal welfare advocates have also spoken publicly following the allegations, pointing to the often-discussed connection between domestic violence cases and cruelty toward pets.
The case continues to generate strong reactions online due to the disturbing nature of the accusations and the involvement of children and family pets inside the home.
