Carey Dale Grayson was executed in Alabama on November 21, 2024, nearly three decades after he was convicted in the killing of 37-year-old Vickie Deblieux, a hitchhiker traveling through the state on her way to Louisiana. His execution took place at William C. Holman Correctional Facility and marked the third time Alabama used nitrogen gas as an execution method.
The case began in February 1994, when Deblieux accepted a ride from a group of teenagers. Prosecutors later said the group took her to a remote area, where she was brutally attacked and killed. Her body was later discovered by rock climbers, and investigators quickly realized they were dealing with a violent homicide involving multiple suspects.
Detectives built the case through witness statements, physical evidence, and the actions of the young men after the killing. According to court records, Grayson and three others were eventually arrested and charged in connection with Deblieux’s death. The investigation showed that the crime did not end with the killing, as the victim’s body had also been mutilated in an effort that shocked both investigators and the public.
Grayson was 19 at the time of the crime, making him the only defendant eligible to remain under a death sentence after later legal rulings affected the cases of younger co-defendants. The other participants, who were minors at the time, ultimately received life sentences. Grayson’s conviction and sentence were upheld through years of appeals.
In the years leading up to the execution, Grayson’s attorneys challenged Alabama’s use of nitrogen hypoxia, arguing that the method raised constitutional concerns. Courts rejected the final efforts to stop the execution, allowing the state to proceed. Witnesses reported that before the execution, Grayson cursed at prison officials and made obscene gestures while strapped to the gurney. Nitrogen gas was then administered, and he was pronounced dead at 6:33 p.m. Officials said the execution was carried out under the state’s protocol, though the method remained the subject of national debate.
For investigators and prosecutors, Grayson’s execution marked the final chapter in a case that began with the murder of a woman simply trying to reach her family.
