Warriors Could Target Anthony Davis in Bold Move to Strengthen LeBron James Pursuit

The Golden State Warriors are at a crossroads as they grapple with the fallout from a disappointing 2025-26 NBA season. After losing star player Jimmy Butler to a torn ACL in January, the team fell short of the playoffs, culminating in a heartbreaking defeat to the Phoenix Suns in the play-in tournament.

With the Stephen Curry era seemingly on the decline, the Warriors face a pressing need to shake things up if they hope to remain contenders. While acquiring Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo may be a long shot, the possibility of landing soon-to-be-free agent LeBron James is tantalizingly within reach.

Sources indicate that Curry is eager to meet with James, hoping to persuade him to join the Warriors. To make that pitch even more appealing, the team might consider pursuing Anthony Davis, who is reportedly hinting at a desire to leave the Washington Wizards.

Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley suggests that while the Warriors may shy away from a full-blown pursuit of Giannis, a calculated move for Davis could be the answer. Not only would Davis fill a significant gap in the Warriors’ frontcourt, but his friendship with James could play a pivotal role in convincing the superstar to relocate to San Francisco.

Lakers' LeBron James Sends Message on Anthony Davis' Scary Game 5 Injury

Buckley outlines a potential trade scenario where the Warriors would send Butler, the No. 11 pick in the upcoming draft, and a protected 2030 first-round pick to the Wizards in exchange for Davis. This deal could provide the Warriors with a much-needed boost in their frontcourt, especially after their unsuccessful attempt to address this issue by acquiring Kristaps Porzingis earlier in the season.

Davis, a 10-time All-Star, averaged impressive numbers last season, showcasing his ability to dominate both offensively and defensively. His presence alongside Draymond Green could significantly enhance the Warriors’ defensive capabilities, while also adding a much-needed scoring threat in the paint—something the team has struggled with in recent years.

On the flip side, the Wizards stand to benefit from this trade as well. With the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, they could select promising talent AJ Dybantsa and also gain another lottery pick at No. 11, potentially adding Nate Ament to their roster. Additionally, acquiring Butler, despite his injury, could allow them to flip him for further assets if he returns to form.

However, the proposed deal is not without its risks. Davis has faced significant injury challenges, playing only 20 games last season and 51 the year before. With Curry, James, and Green also dealing with age-related concerns, the Warriors could find themselves in a precarious situation if injuries strike again.

This high-stakes gamble could either propel the Warriors back into championship contention or lead to further disappointment. As the team weighs its options, fans are left wondering: Is the risk worth the potential reward?
