According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Thunder are not likely to pursue a deal for the Milwaukee Bucks superstar. “While the notion of Oklahoma City making a splash for Giannis to counter Victor Wembanyama might seem appealing, sources familiar with the Thunder’s strategy continue to downplay their chances as a serious contender for Antetokounmpo,” Fischer explained.
Although the Thunder possess significant draft assets and a wealth of young talent that could catch Milwaukee’s eye, history suggests that general manager Sam Presti is unlikely to pay a steep price for an aging star like Antetokounmpo, who will be 31 next season. Fischer noted, “Presti is not known for making high-cost trades to enhance his lineup, especially for players nearing the end of their prime.”
Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints echoed these sentiments, pointing out that while discussions around Antetokounmpo have emerged, the star’s preference to remain in the Eastern Conference complicates any potential trade scenario.
As the Thunder reflect on their recent playoff performance, it appears they are not in a rush to make a desperate move. NBA insider Marc Stein remarked, “After consulting with various executives following Oklahoma City’s Game 7 loss to San Antonio, I have yet to find anyone who believes Sam Presti would make such a dramatic shift in response to being dethroned by the defending champions.”
