Jeffrey Epstein’s death in federal custody on August 10, 2019, continues to be the subject of scrutiny, debate, and conflicting accounts. In the weeks leading up to his death, multiple inmates who were housed with Epstein provided statements describing his behavior inside the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York. These accounts, later reported by The New York Times Magazine, include claims that Epstein expressed suicidal thoughts and exhibited concerning behavior while in custody awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
One of Epstein’s former cellmates, Nicholas Tartaglione, a former police officer serving multiple life sentences, stated in interviews that he twice observed Epstein attempting self-harm. According to Tartaglione, on one occasion Epstein was seen attempting to use bed linens near a cell window fixture, and on another, he allegedly appeared to be acting suspiciously in the cell during the night. Tartaglione further claimed he discovered what he believed to be a makeshift noose hidden in Epstein’s cell, which he reported to correctional staff.
Tartaglione also described a handwritten note allegedly authored by Epstein, in which Epstein referenced feeling investigated and denied wrongdoing. The note, as described in reporting, contained statements reflecting frustration over ongoing scrutiny and referenced thoughts about death and control over his own fate. After these incidents, Tartaglione’s legal team reportedly retained the note, citing potential relevance to future legal disputes or accusations involving their client.
Following the second alleged incident, Epstein was moved to a different cell arrangement. Another inmate, Efrain Reyes, later told reporters that he also observed concerning behavior, including Epstein attempting to fashion a cord from bedding materials. Reyes said he intervened and warned correctional officers, and later expressed concern that Epstein should not be left alone given prior incidents and suicide watch status.
Despite these warnings, Epstein was ultimately left without a cellmate after August 9, 2019, a decision that has been heavily scrutinized in subsequent investigations and reports. Protocols for high-risk inmates generally recommend continuous monitoring or assigned cellmates following self-harm concerns, raising questions about staffing and supervision levels at the facility during that period.
The following morning, Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell and later pronounced dead. The official conclusion ruled his death a suicide, but discrepancies in supervision, staffing failures, and conflicting witness accounts have fueled ongoing debate and multiple official reviews of the circumstances surrounding his final hours.
More than five years later, the case remains one of the most controversial in modern U.S. criminal justice history, with continuing public interest focused not only on Epstein’s crimes and connections, but also on the breakdowns in custody supervision that occurred in the days leading up to his death.
