Kate Middleton and Prince William continue royal duties during lockdown while balancing family life
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge continued carrying out their royal responsibilities during the COVID-19 lockdown, even while spending time at home with their children during the Easter holiday period. Despite the challenges of the global crisis, the couple maintained a full schedule of virtual engagements, highlighting their ongoing commitment to supporting frontline workers and national services.
On Wednesday, Prince William and Kate Middleton took part in telephone calls with staff at Queen’s Hospital Burton and University Hospital Monklands in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. During these conversations, the couple spoke directly with NHS workers to thank them for their dedication and resilience during an unprecedented period for the UK healthcare system.
This engagement marked the fourth time the couple had publicly expressed support for the NHS since the beginning of the pandemic. In the weeks prior, they had also visited the London Ambulance Service 111 call centre in Croydon, where they learned how demand on emergency services had increased significantly as a result of the crisis.
In addition to their hospital outreach, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also shared a heartfelt video of their children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—joining in the national “clap for carers” initiative, a moment that resonated strongly with the public and highlighted the family’s personal connection to the national effort. The couple also contributed to mental health initiatives by helping launch updated guidance aimed at supporting individuals dealing with psychological challenges during lockdown.
The Cambridges were not alone in adapting their royal duties to remote formats. Princess Anne continued her work from Gatcombe Park, participating in meetings via conference call with the Animal Health Trust, of which she serves as President. Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth II, self-isolating at Windsor with Prince Philip, also continued her constitutional role, including holding an audience with then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson by telephone.
As the nation adjusted to extraordinary circumstances, the royal family’s shift to virtual engagements reflected an effort to maintain continuity, support public services, and remain connected with key institutions during a time of national uncertainty.
