In a surprising turn of events, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has mended fences with Knicks owner James Dolan, putting aside their recent tensions for the greater good of the city. “I’ve been in touch with Jim, and I would say that I’m less interested in relitigating the past and more about how we can work together to celebrate this moment for the city,” Mayor Mamdani shared with Fox 5, referencing the recent cancellation of a watch party outside Madison Square Garden. He emphasized that this collaboration is about bringing together all five boroughs of New York.
The friction between Mamdani and Dolan began when President Donald Trump announced his attendance at Game 3 of the Finals. In coordination with the Secret Service, the mayor and NYPD commissioner decided to cancel the watch party, citing safety concerns. However, when Game 4 rolled around, the Knicks were only permitted to host a limited ticketed event for 999 fans, which did not sit well with Dolan.
In response, Dolan canceled the Game 4 watch party and publicly criticized the mayor and NYPD for lacking confidence in their ability to ensure safety, even questioning Mamdani’s loyalty as a Knicks fan. Despite these conflicts, it’s heartening to see both parties come together to celebrate the Knicks’ achievements and foster community spirit across the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island.
NBA star Karl-Anthony Towns also recognized the unifying power of the Knicks’ success, noting, “It was so amazing to see our team bring together New York. Like, I’ve never seen all five boroughs get together.” His comments during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers highlighted the rare camaraderie among New Yorkers, even among fans of rival teams.
