ALABAMA EXECUTES ALAN EUGENE MILLER USING NITROGEN HYPOXIA
ATMORE, Ala. — Alabama inmate Alan Eugene Miller was executed on September 26, 2024, at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections. Officials said the execution was carried out using nitrogen hypoxia, a method the state has authorized in recent years.
Miller, 59, was convicted of capital murder in 2000 in connection with the 1999 shooting deaths of three coworkers in Jefferson County, Alabama. Prosecutors said Miller shot and killed the victims at two separate workplaces on August 5, 1999.
Court records show Miller was employed as a delivery truck driver at the time of the shootings. He was arrested shortly after the incident and later convicted on three counts of capital murder. A jury recommended a death sentence, which was imposed under Alabama law.
Miller’s appeals over the years included claims related to mental health and trial representation. Those appeals were denied by state and federal courts.
Alabama authorized nitrogen hypoxia as an execution method in 2018. Miller selected that method for his execution, according to court filings and prison records.
Officials said Miller was pronounced dead at the prison following the procedure. No additional details about the execution were released by the Alabama Department of Corrections.
The case had previously drawn attention during legal proceedings related to Alabama’s execution protocols, including a failed attempt to carry out Miller’s execution in 2022 using a different method.
Family members of the victims were present for the execution, according to prison officials.
Miller’s execution is among the first in the United States carried out using nitrogen hypoxia.
