To fund the transition, they listed Well Deserved for sale for approximately $435,000 to $440,000.
The listing soon attracted the attention of a man named Skylar Deleon.
What appeared to be an ordinary business transaction would ultimately become a death sentence.
The Perfect Disguise
Skylar Deleon presented himself as a prospective buyer interested in purchasing the yacht.
According to prosecutors, Deleon went to extraordinary lengths to gain the couple’s trust. He attended meetings with his pregnant wife, Jennifer Henderson, and their infant child, creating the image of a young family preparing to begin a new chapter of their own.
The strategy worked.
To Thomas and Jackie Hawks, Deleon appeared harmless. Nothing about the meetings suggested they were dealing with a dangerous criminal.
Behind the friendly appearance, however, investigators later concluded that Deleon was plotting to steal not only the yacht but also the couple’s financial assets.

The Sea Trial That Became a Death Trap
On November 15, 2004, Thomas and Jackie agreed to take Deleon on a sea trial aboard Well Deserved near Newport Beach.
Deleon was not alone.
Joining him were two accomplices: John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Alonso Machain.
At some point after the yacht left shore and reached open water, the meeting turned violent.
According to evidence presented during the trial, the three men attacked the couple, handcuffing and restraining them aboard their own vessel.
Thomas Hawks was forced to sign paperwork transferring ownership of the yacht and authorizing access to financial accounts.
The attackers had achieved their objective.
But they had no intention of leaving witnesses behind.
A Horrifying Death in the Pacific
Prosecutors revealed one of the most disturbing murder methods ever described in a California courtroom.
After forcing the necessary signatures, the attackers bound Thomas and Jackie together and attached them to a heavy anchor.
Then they threw them overboard while they were still alive.
The couple disappeared beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean.
Neither Thomas nor Jackie Hawks was ever seen again.
Their bodies have never been recovered.
Investigators believe the victims drowned after being dragged to the ocean floor by the anchor’s weight.
For family members, the absence of remains only deepened the tragedy. There would be no funeral, no burial, and no final goodbye.

The Investigation Begins
Initially, authorities were confronted with what appeared to be a missing-persons case.
However, suspicious financial activity quickly drew attention.
After the couple vanished, efforts were made to access and transfer money from their accounts. Investigators soon discovered irregular transactions linked to individuals involved in the yacht sale.

His testimony helped prosecutors reconstruct the events that occurred aboard Well Deserved and provided critical evidence against the other participants.
Authorities concluded that the murders had been planned in advance as part of a robbery scheme.
The yacht sale had never been legitimate.
Instead, prosecutors argued that Deleon carefully selected the Hawkses as targets, manipulated their trust, and orchestrated a plan designed to steal their property and eliminate them as witnesses.
The level of premeditation shocked even experienced investigators.
Justice for Thomas and Jackie Hawks
Years after the murders, the defendants faced trial.
In 2009, Skylar Deleon was convicted of orchestrating the murders and sentenced to death.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was also sentenced to death for his role in the killings.
Jennifer Henderson, Deleon’s former wife, was convicted for participating in the conspiracy and received a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Alonso Machain received a reduced sentence after cooperating with authorities and helping prosecutors secure convictions against the others involved.
Although California has suspended executions under a statewide moratorium, the death sentences imposed in the case remain in effect.
