In a heartfelt revelation, former Los Angeles Lakers forward Matt Barnes shared a touching story about the late Kobe Bryant that is bound to resonate with fans. During an episode of the Out The Mud podcast, Barnes recounted how Bryant stood by him in a way that showcased their unique bond as teammates.
Barnes, who played alongside Bryant from 2010 to 2012, often found himself facing hefty fines for defending his fellow players. According to him, these fines were a result of his fierce loyalty rather than any personal altercations. “I probably lost over half a million,” Barnes revealed. “My fines were never because people messed with me. They were always about standing up for my teammates.”
He continued, “I wasn’t a bully, but if someone picked on one of my teammates, I was there to back them up. They’re like family to me.” Remarkably, Barnes noted that Kobe was the only one who helped him cover those fines, despite the wealth of other teammates. “I got hit with 30, 40, $50,000 fines, and they’d say, ‘Appreciate you, MB,’ but come on, man, you’re making $30 million. Pay that fine!”
In addition to Barnes’ story, Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony reminisced about a humorous encounter involving Kobe and Jeremy Lin during the height of the Linsanity phenomenon in 2012. On the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, Anthony recalled a pre-game conversation where he jokingly warned Kobe about Lin’s rising talent. “I told him, ‘You’re about to get your a bust,’ and he shot back, ‘By who? Who the f* is Jeremy Lin?’”
That night, Lin proved his worth by scoring 38 points in a stunning victory against the Lakers, leaving a lasting impression on both fans and players alike.
