Tyler L. Yates, identified by prison records as a Level 4 inmate at New Folsom State Prison in Sacramento, is now at the center of one of the most disturbing sequences of custodial violence in recent California history. The latest incident occurred at 6:13 a. m. when correctional officers conducting a routine security check found Yates’s cellmate, Jake Kennedy, dead from multiple stab wounds. Staff immediately restrained Yates, who was in the cell at the time, and transported Kennedy to the institution’s medical unit, where he was pronounced dead. The killing of Kennedy came less than two weeks after Yates and Kennedy allegedly acted together in the fatal stabbing of another inmate on the prison’s main exercise yard. The killing was investigated as a homicide, and both men were moved to a segregation unit during the probe. In 2024, a Sacramento County jury convicted Yates of first-degree murder for stabbing Marcus to death, sentencing him to life without the possibility of parole as a second striker. What makes the case so confounding to prison observers is the timing. Yates was sentenced to eight years in 2017. With standard good-time credits in California, he was roughly three years away from release when he committed the first murder. He had no incentive to throw away his freedom, yet he did. By 2024, he had been convicted and sentenced to life without parole. He had nothing left to lose.
