INDIANA TO EXECUTE COP KILLER BENJAMIN RITCHIE — SECOND FEDERAL EXECUTION IN STATE SINCE 2009
Indiana officials are preparing to execute Benjamin Ritchie, 45, the man convicted of killing Beech Grove Police Officer Bill Toney in 2000. Ritchie is scheduled to die by lethal injection at the Indiana State Prison on Tuesday, May 20, before sunrise, unless a last-minute court order intervene
Ritchie, who was 20 at the time of the crime, had been on probation for a 1998 burglary conviction when he and accomplices stole a van in Beech Grove, near Indianapolis. During a subsequent foot chase, Ritchie fatally shot Officer Toney, 31, a father of two, five times. The killing sent shockwaves through the local community and has remained one of Indiana’s most notorious cases of violence against law enforcement.
Ritchie has spent more than 20 years on death row. Throughout that time, his legal team filed numerous appeals and motions challenging aspects of his trial, including claims of ineffective counsel and procedural errors. All efforts were ultimately denied, leaving the path clear for the scheduled execution.
The Beech Grove Police Department released a statement honoring Officer Toney’s service and condemning the crime: “Officer William Toney lost his life 25 years ago serving the community he lived in. Taking a solemn oath to uphold the Constitution and laws of this great state, so that its citizens may lead a peaceful life. His life was violently taken from him by an individual whose actions adversely affected the innocent and ripped at the very fabric that holds society together.”
Ritchie’s execution will be the second in Indiana since 2009 and comes amid ongoing national debate about capital punishment, particularly in cases involving the killing of law enforcement officers. The case has drawn attention not only for the severity of the crime but also for its lasting emotional impact on the victims’ families and the community.
