When acclaimed biographer Walter Isaacson decided to follow Elon Musk’s life story, he was not simply documenting the rise of a successful entrepreneur. He was attempting to understand one of the most influential, controversial, and unpredictable figures of the modern era.
Musk was already a global phenomenon — the billionaire behind Tesla, SpaceX, and a growing collection of technology ventures. To some people, he was a visionary who pushed humanity toward electric vehicles, reusable rockets, artificial intelligence, and space exploration. “There’s a large percentage of this country that thinks he’s a villain. They hate him. And there’s, I think, an equally large percentage of people who are wide-eyed fans and think he walks on water,” Isaacson explained when discussing the difficulty of capturing Musk’s full personality.

Isaacson, who previously wrote biographies of figures such as Steve Jobs, Leonardo da Vinci, Henry Kissinger, and Jennifer Doudna, was approached with the idea of writing about Musk during a period when the entrepreneur was reaching historic milestones.
At the time, Musk was transforming multiple industries at once. Tesla had become a symbol of the electric vehicle revolution. SpaceX had achieved what many believed was impossible by developing reusable rockets and reshaping commercial spaceflight. But before agreeing to write the biography, Isaacson established strict conditions.

Surprisingly, Musk agreed.
