A tragic accident during a military training exercise in Pennsylvania claimed the life of a young National Guard soldier, and the details revealed in an official investigation are both heartbreaking and deeply disturbing.
According to a U.S. Army report released this week, 20-year-old Specialist Mackenzie L. Shay was driving an M1120 tactical vehicle at Fort Indiantown Gap on October 22. Two military trucks were traveling in a convoy along a training route when Shay’s vehicle collided with the truck directly ahead of her.
The impact was devastating. The rear platform of the first vehicle pierced the cab of the second truck, crushing the young driver inside. Fellow soldiers immediately pulled Shay from the wreckage, but she was already unconscious and had no pulse. Emergency responders attempted to save her, but she could not be revived.
Three other service members involved in the accident were taken to the hospital as a precaution. None of them suffered serious injuries.
Shay served as a petroleum supply specialist with Pennsylvania’s 28th Infantry Division. She was only 20 years old and had her entire future ahead of her.
The Army stated that this was the first fatality involving a Ground Mobility Vehicle during fiscal year 2023, which began on October 1. Based on data from the previous four years, an average of nine soldiers die annually in similar military vehicle accidents.
