Irish sporting legend Conor McGregor dubs Katie Taylor the boxing GOAT after beating Chantelle Cameron to become a two-weight undisputed champion

Conor McGregor was quick to hail his compatriot Katie Taylor after her victory over Chantelle Cameron on Saturday night, dubbing her the boxing GOAT and echoing the Bray Bomber’s call for a trilogy contest.

Taylor secured a majority decision win in Dublin (95-95, 98-92, 96-94) to avenge her one professional defeat, which came in the same city six months ago, winning back her light-welterweight titles.

It was not without drama, though, with the home favourite hitting the deck inside the first round, although the referee judged it to have been a slip, rather than a knockdown by the Brit.

McGregor was absent, but there were still famous faces in the crowd, with singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran in attendance along with approximately 13,000 fans at the 3 Arena in the Irish capital.

The UFC legend announced he would not attend the fight having slammed his homeland’s ‘lax borders’ after a stabbing in Dublin with rioting ensuing on Thursday evening.

‘Two division, Irish born and bred, UNIFIED World Champions!’ he wrote, accompanied by a picture of the two fighters at a previous event.

Taylor’s victory saw her settle her score with Cameron, with a number of fans flocking to social media to celebrate what was an intriguing contest, dubbing it a fight of the year contender.

The home favourite came flying out of the blocks, making a much quicker start than back in May, looking to make fast combinations while her opponent attempted to work the jab.

Cameron – who was looking to dominate the centre of the ring – sustained a nasty cut in the third round of their bout, with the fight being temporarily stopped so the doctor could check whether she was fit to continue.

Cameron’s cut was checked again before the fifth, with both women going to war shortly after. However, the British star was growing frustrated with the Bray Bomber for clinching.

At the end of the 10th, Taylor almost went down again, but managed to hold her footing, which likely proved crucial with the scoring of the tie.

The bout – a contender for fight of the year – was scored 95-95, 98-92, 96-94 in Taylor’s favour

McGregor’s absence from the fight comes at a time of rioting in the Irish capital city following a stabbing outside a school on Thursday.

A night of riots in the Irish capital followed as around 500 people fought running battles with riot police, looted shops and torched a double-decker bus.

McGregor responded with a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter, including a declaration that Ireland was at war, as he blamed the attack on a ‘lax border’ and ‘gravy train benefits.’

His comments were condemned by government ministers including Michael Martin, before the fighter accused them of ‘blaming anyone but themselves’.

Five people including three children were injured on Thursday when a knifeman attacked a group of young people in Dublin before being overpowered
