Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods drops a new trailer before its return to theaters.
The movie will play in select theaters and feature not only the English dub but also a special extended version of the film. The movie is a key piece of the franchise timeline as it rebooted certain events and made Dragon Ball GT non-canon. After the Buu Saga, the franchise “stopped” until the next anime came out, but it wasn’t met with as much love as the previous series. Then, the live-action adaptation came out but franchise creator Akira Toriyama wasn’t happy with it, so he revived the property once more through Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.
Dragon Ball Goes Super
That led to numerous things, including a second film featuring Frieza and the start of Dragon Ball Super. They even retold the two “prequel” movie plots within the new anime series but with extended stories and new content. Without Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, none of this would exist. In the film, fans learned about a being known as Lord Beerus and his assistant, Whis. Beerus is a God of Destruction, and his goal is to keep the universe “balanced” and to “weed out” races that are too weak to survive.
He eventually has a vision of who he feels will be a legendary foe, the being known as a “Super Saiyan God.” This leads him to Earth, where he finds Goku, Vegeta, and the rest of the Z-Fighters. As viewers discover, Vegeta knows Beerus and is aware of his power level. Despite the Z-Fighters’ best efforts, they can’t stop Beerus, but Goku, with some help from the others, is able to unlock the Super Saiyan God form and clashes with Beerus for the survival of Earth.
