Earlier this month, Serena Williams announced her intention to retire from tennis. On Monday, she began her final US Open. On August 29, the tennis icon faced off against Montenegrin Danka Kovinic in the opening round of the women’s singles competition at the US Open in New York City. Williams donned a crystal-studded Nike headband with her hair pulled up in a ponytail for the match. Olympia Ohanian, her 4-year-old daughter, was observing from the audience. Olympia wore her own hair in a set of braids embellished with white beads, which was the exact same hairstyle Williams worn 23 years previously during her maiden US Open.
When Williams defeated Martina Hingis in 1999 to win her first grand slam title, she was just 17 years old and looked amazing in a set of braids decorated in pink and white beads. The victory, which marked one of Williams’s earliest forays into the professional tennis scene, has endured over the years as one of her most pivotal milestones in the game. Olympia applauded her mother on from the stands at the US Open on Monday, checking her pink disposable camera and taking pictures between sets to capture this momentous occasion in her mother’s career.
Williams entered the court wearing a figure skating-inspired competition costume. The ensemble had a crystal-dusted bodice and a tiered skirt with embellishments. Olympia Ohanian, wearing a matching crystal dress over a black long-sleeve blouse, sat next to her father, Alexis Ohanian, in the bleachers that overlooked the tennis courts.
