The NBA offseason is beginning to center around Jaylen Brown, as league-wide speculation grows over his long-term future with the Boston Celtics following another early playoff exit.
According to NBA insider Chris Mannix of NBC Sports, the Celtics and the Atlanta Hawks previously held brief exploratory discussions regarding a potential trade involving Brown during the last offseason. While the conversations did not progress into formal negotiations, they are expected to be revisited this summer if Boston becomes more open to reshaping its roster.
Initial talks reportedly stalled due to financial considerations. Atlanta was reluctant to absorb Brown’s significant contract, valued at more than $53 million per season, while Boston had no intention of moving one of its franchise cornerstones without a substantial return package.
Brown delivered the strongest statistical season of his career, taking on an expanded offensive role while Jayson Tatum recovered from injury. However, Boston’s campaign ended in disappointment with a first-round playoff loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, prompting renewed evaluation of the team’s long-term direction.
Brown remains under contract for three additional seasons, with a total value exceeding $180 million. While the Celtics continue to publicly express confidence in their core, league sources suggest the front office could at least consider significant trade offers if they believe it improves championship contention.
Atlanta is not alone in monitoring the situation. Several contending teams, including the Miami Heat, the Houston Rockets, and the Golden State Warriors, are expected to evaluate the possibility of pursuing Brown should he become available. Much of this interest is also influenced by broader league expectations surrounding potential movement involving Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Off-court developments have also added attention to the situation. Brown recently received a $50,000 fine after publicly criticizing referees and making comments regarding Joel Embiid during a livestream. While the remarks sparked debate, Brown later reaffirmed his commitment to Boston and denied any internal conflict with team leadership, including president of basketball operations Brad Stevens.
