Forget thermals; the hottest look of the season is sports kit. No, I’m not going all ‘new year, new gym membership’ on you — in fact, quite the opposite. For athleisure has gone haute and it’s far too swanky to sweat in.
The only physical exertion needed to pull off this trend is lifting a flat white to your lips.
Coined ‘coffee-run chic’, the way to wear 2024’s sportswear is layered up on the way to brunch. It’s the new off-duty uniform. Just take your cue from the A-list — Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber both adore the sports luxe look, while Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has been spotted in £130 Alo yoga leggings with a giant YSL bag.
Leather joggers, cashmere hoodies and designer running socks are the hero pieces, ideally teamed with Onitsuka Tiger’s Mexico 66 trainers.
And an XL trophy tote is the must-have accessory. Think Princess Diana pairing her Gucci top-handle with cycling shorts and a sweater on her way to the Chelsea Harbour Club.
So, gather your bomber jacket, baseball cap and bagel — here’s how to do the sports luxe look…
Slogan sweatshirt
Sweatshirt, £30, next.co.uk
A slogan sweatshirt adds a playful twist and is an easy way to tap into the coffee-run trend — just throw one over your comfiest jeans. Sporty & Rich is the go-to brand for cool,
varsity-inspired styles. The Wellness sweatshirt (£155) is a style-set favourite. Head to Sezane for sweaters with a dash of ‘je ne sais quoi’, or dial up that weekend feeling and team Mint Velvet’s Sunday sweater (£69) or Next’s Chamonix design (£30) with a pair of posh joggers.
Alternatively, a hoodie is a sportswear classic. Keep it looking elevated by sticking to a neutral hue and a relaxed — but not baggy — fit.
Whistles’ grey wool style (£119) balances cosy with chic. And you’ll never go wrong with cashmere. Try Cos and Me+Em.
Luxe leggings

Yellow leggings, £27.50, marksandspencer.com
Saggy sofa-surfing leggings be gone — today’s status styles are well-made and flattering. Celebs wear Alo Yoga’s sculpting Moto leggings (£120), while M&S’s impressive Goodmove range, in chic colours, cost less than £40.
Pick an ankle-length, high-waisted pair for a streamlined silhouette.
If you want extra coverage when braving leggings, add a long coat, such as a trench.
Upgraded joggers
Wool/cashmere joggers, £66.50, chintiandparker.com
Perhaps the easiest — and comfiest — way to get the haute athleisure look is to start with posh joggers.
Switch your scruffy flannel pair for luxe fabrics and tailored silhouettes. Chinti & Parker’s wool/cashmere pants (on sale at £66.50) are an on-trend
wide-leg style. For a pared-back look, team Reiss’s classic cuffed joggers (on sale at £48) with a crew-neck jumper and tailored overcoat.
I can’t think of anything I’d rather slip into on a chilly weekend morning than Sweaty Betty’s Repose joggers (£47) which have a goes-with-every-shoe tapered leg and a fleece lining.
Bomber jacket
Tegan recycled bomber, £229, baukjen.com
The bomber has made a comeback to become the jacket of the season. It’s perfect for giving your off-duty uniform a retro sporty spin, but you should go for a polished style in a premium fabric. Mango’s leather bomber was a hit with the likes of Gigi Hadid last year, and a similar style is on sale now at £199. You could wear it with tailored trousers and loafers to the office. The boxy cut of Hush’s woollen bomber (£80) gives volume to slim joggers. Baukjen and Albaray are also worth looking at. Consider slipping a body warmer underneath. The White Company’s borg gilet (£79) also adds plush texture.
Technical trainers
£130, onitsuka tiger.com
While white pumps are a classic, this look is all about a chunkier trainer. The aim is to appear as if you’ve been pounding the Peloton (even when the most exercise you’ve done is walk to the corner shop). Spongy soles are essential, and extra style points go to retro logos. Look for New Balance, Onitsuka Tiger, Asics and Veja; the latter’s rubber platform Venturi style will literally
put a spring in your step. Or make like Princess Di and reach for Reebok’s Club C Double sneakers (on sale at £43).
Sports socks
Spencer socks, £18, uk.varley.com
A pair of white ribbed sports socks not only adds an on-trend vintage twist to your outfit, but will also keep ankles warm in a winter chill. You can spend a fortune on designer socks —
Net-a-Porter is selling a two-pack by Toteme for £70, for example. Wiser to keep it cheap and cheerful. After all, you don’t want to be heartbroken when they accidentally turn greige in the wash. M&S does multipacks of plain white and Uniqlo has colourful striped styles. For a hint of everyday luxe, try Varley’s Spencer sock in plush boucle (£18).
Baseball cap
Khaki cap, £35, meandem.com
No longer just for covering up a bad hair day, the baseball cap adds instant fashion points to posh
casual outfits.
There’s no shortage of designer caps to choose from — every luxury label from Burberry to Balenciaga has done one. However, you don’t need to spend a lot. Alex Eagle Sporting Club’s cotton twill cap (£35) is the fashion editors’ pick. Me+Em’s plain khaki cotton cap (£35) would look great with gold hoops and a parka worn on the way to the local cafe — performative yoga mat optional.
