“This is based on scientific evidence,” Parkinson said, emphasizing the importance of the compounds found in the soil. Despite the absence of Kristin’s remains, the search has not been deemed futile, as investigators continue to explore all avenues in the case.

Paul Flores was convicted of Kristin Smart’s 1996 murder in 2022 and sentenced to life in prison. His father, Ruben Flores, was accused of helping to conceal Kristin’s body, but he was acquitted of accessory charges. The case had remained cold for years until authorities arrested Paul and Ruben in 2021, after an extensive investigation that included new forensic evidence.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Paul Flores had raped Kristin in his dorm room and then killed her, later enlisting his father to help bury her body under a deck at the Flores’ Arroyo Grande home.
