Baltimore Ravens WR Odell Beckham Jr., LB Roquan Smith Issued Fines For Hits vs. Detroit Lions

Baltimore Ravens wideout Odell Beckham Jr. received the third fine in as many weeks for initiating helmet-to-helmet contact in the win over the Detroit Lions.

Ravens wideout Odell Beckham Jr. has been fined … again.

Beckham was fined for an unnecessary roughness call for a hit in the game against the Lions on Sunday. It comes in the wake of two separate fines he received last week after the Baltimore win over the Titans in London.

The former LSU receiver was fined $21,844 for a hit on Lions safety Kerby Joseph when Beckham lowered his head and initiated helmet-to-helmet contact after making a catch inside the 10-yard line. There was no flag for the contact, but the play was negated for an offensive holding call.

Joseph was forced to leave the game to be evaluated for a concussion. He has since been cleared and was not on this week’s injury report.

Baltimore linebacker Roquan Smith was fined $16,391 for a hit on Lions quarterback Jared Goff that was flagged during the game

Odell Beckham Jr. initiated helmet-to-helmet contact with Lions safety Kerby Joseph on Oct. 22.

After the Ravens win over the Titans in London, Beckham was fined $33,317 for a par of unnecessary roughness calls, and Titans defensive end Jeffery Simmons was fined $11,473 for one per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Things went south between Beckham and Simmons when Simmons jumped on Baltimore rookie receiver Zay Flowers’ legs after a play.

OBJ saw the play and determined it was a cheap shot on Simmons’ part, and retaliated with a knee to the groin. Simmons then pushed OBJ causing him to fall to the ground in an apparent flop.

The game continued to the final gun, but the hostilities did not.

After the game, Simmons went searching for Beckham, apparently hoping for retaliation. When Beckham was located, Simmons went right for the facemask, escalating the situation to the point where Ravens players had to call stadium security to break it up.

Due to the size differences, it would not have necessarily been a fair fight. Simmons is 6-4, 305 pounds, where Beckham is listed at 5-11, 200 pounds. But OBJ did not hesitate to go after a much larger player when it came to defending a teammate.

The Ravens pulled out the win and now lead the AFC North by a half-game over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Baltimore will be in action on Oct. 22 at home against the NFC North-leading Detroit Lions.
