In a chilling and premeditated attack, Ramy Hany Mounir Fahim, a 30-year-old financial analyst, ambushed his co-worker, Griffin Cuomo, and Cuomo’s roommate, Johnathan Bahm, in their Anaheim, California home on April 19, 2022. Fahim, who had been growing increasingly frustrated with Cuomo over workplace issues, carefully plotted and executed the brutal killings. The attack unfolded when Fahim waited for hours before ambushing Cuomo in the apartment, fatally stabbing him with what prosecutors described as a “hunting dagger.” Bahm, who was on the phone with 911 pleading for help, was also killed after Fahim pushed through the door and stabbed him as he was still on the call.
Fahim’s calculated actions stunned investigators, who discovered that he had been seen on the roof of the apartment building earlier in the day, setting the stage for the ambush. Cuomo, who was stabbed at least 40 times, had been a target of Fahim’s anger after allegedly assigning him too much work, according to reports from his co-workers. Fahim’s disturbing behavior in the workplace, including writing chilling comments on his computer about serial killers and their victims, raised red flags long before the attack.
Despite pleading guilty to the murders, Fahim’s actions were deemed to be the result of calculated violence, not insanity, as Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer emphasized in a statement. The two victims, who were well-loved members of their community, had a bright future ahead of them. Tributes to both Cuomo and Bahm paint a picture of two kind-hearted individuals who had left an indelible mark on everyone who knew them. Bahm was described as “the best of us” by friends, while Cuomo’s former professor remembered him as “the kind of student that showed up with passion, kindness, and a contagious curiosity.”
Fahim’s upcoming sentencing will bring an end to the tragic case that has left the victims’ families and the community grappling with the violent and senseless loss of two promising young men.
