Ryan Reynolds is skilled at taking down websites. And now that he did exactly that last night—who could have predicted that he would be reuniting with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in Deadpool 3?—the two are trying to take over the internet.
By which we mean that they’re trying to figure out what the hell is going on, albeit maybe not to the extent you’d want. Reynolds and Jackman had evidently previously filmed a follow-up video in which they promised to address (some of) your endless, endless questions, so they must have known how everyone would respond to the Wolverine news.
Quick explainer video that tackles…
1) Timeline questions
2) Logan canon
3) MCU FAQ
4) Whether we can do this all day or not pic.twitter.com/50lBsfYS5p— Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) September 28, 2022
Look, this is Ryan Reynolds – full-on answers were never going to be on the cards here. Are there any lip-readers out there who have an idea of what they say the plot here is going to be? Maybe they’ll release an uncensored cut down the line, and reveal that they actually did blab the whole plot in this video.
There are, however some interesting nuggets: most importantly, an update on how exactly this fits into what can loosely be described as the X-Men movie ‘canon’ (an extremely Jeremy Bearimy timeline at best). With some fans concerned that Wolverine’s return in Deadpool 3 will undermine the emotional potency of Logan, Reynolds sets it straight: “Logan takes place in 2029, totally separate thing,” he says. “Logan died in Logan. Not touching that.”
While much of the video is played for a joke, that line seems a tad more serious – an acknowledgement, beyond all the self-referential Deadpool-brand humour, that Wolverine (and Logan in particular) really does mean something to people. Still, it was never clear whether Logan was specifically set in the same continuity as the other X-Men films anyway, and it seems all of this entering the MCU will be some kind of multiverses jamboree. In other words, stop worrying and get ready for the Wolverine / Deadpool crossover you always dreamed off. Hey, it can’t be any worse than the finale of X-Men: Origins – Wolverine, right?
