In the first teaser for “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which was published on Tuesday, Lady Gaga makes her much-awaited appearance as Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar-winning portrayal of the Joker.
The teaser trailer opens with Phoenix’s Joker, real name Arthur Fleck, in handcuffs and with a straight expression as he is led through the prison. He sees Quinn standing in what looks to be a choir room as she passes by in the hallway.
Later, Gaga’s Quinn is seen gesturing to a gun and squeezing the trigger, saying, “I’m nobody.” “Compared to you, I haven’t accomplished anything with my life.”
The eerie version of the iconic song “What the World Needs Now is Love” plays while the clip continues to feature scenes of the villainously in love couple dancing about the street, avoiding bombs, escaping mobs, and sharing a kiss through Fleck’s jail cell.
Fleck says, “I’ll tell you what’s changed,” at one point. “I’m not by myself anymore.”
The Joker and Harley Quinn have frequently been romantically involved in DC Comics mythology. Quinn first appeared as the villain’s therapist in Arkham Asylum. (Warner Bros. Discovery, the company that owns CNN, also owns DC.)
Although Todd Phillips’ treatment of the Joker in the popular 2019 film “Folie” left many wondering how he would handle these iconic characters in his follow-up. It’s safe to assume that “Folie” will be very different from what the comics include.
Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Zazie Beetz, who plays Fleck’s neighbor Sophie, are also featured in “Folie.”
In 2020, Phoenix took home two Oscars, including best actor for the billion-dollar film “Joker.”
On October 4, “Joker: Folie à Deux” will have its theatrical debut.
