Antes del estreno de Destino final 5 en 2011, el actor de la serie Tony Todd insinuó la posibilidad de dos secuelas más si la película tenía un buen desempeño. En enero de 2019, New Line Cinema anunció que se estaba desarrollando una nueva entrega, con Patrick Melton y Marcus Dunstan elaborando inicialmente un guion descrito como una “reinvención” de la franquicia. En marzo de 2020, el productor Craig Perry reveló que la película se centraría en los socorristas, incluidos los técnicos en emergencias médicas, los bomberos y los agentes de policía. Aclaró que, si bien la película no renovaría por completo la franquicia, seguiría siendo una verdadera película de Destino final. El creador de la serie, Jeffrey Reddick, confirmó en octubre de 2020 que los planes para una 𝑠e𝑥ta película estaban en marcha antes de la pandemia de COVID-19.
