Investigators in California say new forensic testing has indicated the possible presence of human remains on a property linked to the long-running case of missing college student Kristin Smart, whose body has never been recovered.
Kristin Smart, a student at California Polytechnic State University, went missing in 1996 after attending a party and was last seen walking home with fellow student Paul Flores. In 2022, Flores was convicted of first-degree murder in connection with her death and later sentenced to life in prison.
According to the sheriff’s office, the site had been searched previously without success. This time, officials also used advanced methods including ground-penetrating radar and repeated excavation efforts.
Paul Flores was arrested in 2021 after years of being considered a person of interest in the case. During trial proceedings, prosecutors alleged he assaulted and killed Smart after she disappeared from a campus party, while an additional defendant, his father Ruben Flores, was later acquitted of accessory charges.
