The experience ultimately led Sinise to put his acting career on hold in order to focus on caring for his loved ones.

A Devastating Diagnosis

Sinise revealed that his son’s diagnosis came after months of unexplained pain.

According to the actor, doctors eventually discovered a tumor during a CT scan. Recalling that moment, Sinise described seeing the image and thinking, “It looks like a monster grabbing my son’s spine.”

Mac was diagnosed with chordoma, a rare cancer that can be difficult to treat because of its location near critical structures of the body.

The diagnosis marked the beginning of a lengthy medical journey for the family.

Throughout his illness, Sinise said his son demonstrated remarkable composure and determination.

“The way he dealt with it was just pure grace and courage,” Sinise said while reflecting on Mac’s response to the disease.

Despite those difficulties, Sinise remembers his son’s strength and attitude throughout the process.

A Series of Family Crises

Mac’s diagnosis came during an already difficult period for the Sinise family.

The actor explained that the challenges began with his father’s stroke. Around the same time, his wife underwent treatment for stage 3 breast cancer.

Faced with multiple serious health emergencies affecting those closest to him, Sinise made the decision to largely step away from acting and dedicate his time to supporting his family.

His wife has since completed treatment and is now cancer-free.

The Loss of Mac Sinise

Mac Sinise passed away on January 5, 2024.

Following his son’s death, Gary Sinise has continued to honor his memory while sharing aspects of the journey that led to that loss.

The actor described the profound impact the experience has had on him and his family as they continue to navigate life after Mac’s passing.

While stepping back from Hollywood, Sinise remained active through the Gary Sinise Foundation, which supports veterans, first responders, and their families.

The organization continues to provide programs and assistance to those who have served their communities and country.

Sinise also recently produced Brothers After War, a documentary focused on wounded service members returning home from combat and the challenges they face after deployment.

Releasing Mac’s Final Music

Another project close to Sinise’s heart involves sharing music created by his son before his death.

Mac’s songs are now being released, with proceeds benefiting the Gary Sinise Foundation in accordance with his wishes.
