Kanye West and Travis Scott are facing a major setback in Italy as officials cancel their upcoming performances in the Reggio Emilia region, citing security concerns and protests from local community groups.
Prefect Salvatore Angieri, the regional government official, confirmed that both rappers’ shows scheduled for July will no longer take place. The decision followed complaints from members of the local Jewish community about Kanye West’s past antisemitic remarks. The prefecture noted that West’s history of canceled performances in other countries, including the UK, played a role in the decision-making process.
The Italian government emphasized that the expected massive crowds posed a significant security risk. “The combination of the artist’s controversial statements and the anticipated audience size made it impossible to proceed safely,” officials said.
This cancellation contrasts sharply with the duo’s reception in Italy in 2023, when they performed at the historic Circus Maximus in Rome to sold-out crowds. The upcoming canceled shows were set to feature a lineup including The Chainsmokers, Rita Ora, and Swedish House Mafia, highlighting the scale and international draw of the event.
West has recently undertaken what many have called an “apology tour” after the backlash from his controversial comments. In January, he issued a full-page apology in the Wall Street Journal, met with Jewish community leaders, and visited a Jewish Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Despite these efforts, Italian authorities decided that safety concerns and community protests outweighed any reconciliation attempts.
This is part of a broader pattern for Kanye West, who has had shows canceled in multiple countries, including a complete shutdown of London’s Wireless Festival, following past controversial remarks.
