Rui Hachimura is starting to draw real attention on the market, and the Los Angeles Lakers should be careful before even considering the idea of letting him walk.
According to reports from Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, both the San Antonio Spurs and Brooklyn Nets are among the teams showing interest in Hachimura as free agency approaches. That should not come as a surprise. Reliable forwards with size, shooting, and playoff experience are not easy to find.
For the Lakers, the question is not just whether Rui has value.
The question is whether Los Angeles can afford to lose exactly the type of player Luka Dončić needs.
Hachimura fits the modern NBA role-player blueprint. He can space the floor. He can attack closeouts. He can punish smaller defenders. He can finish through contact. He gives the Lakers size on the wing and enough offensive versatility to stay useful when the game slows down.
That matters around Luka.
Dončić is at his best when surrounded by players who can turn his passing into instant pressure. When defenses collapse, Rui can be a catch-and-shoot option. When defenders rotate too aggressively, he can put the ball on the floor and attack the gap. When the Lakers need physical scoring, he can create advantages against mismatches.
Those are not luxury skills. Those are playoff skills.
The Lakers have spent years searching for the right complementary pieces around their stars. Too often, the roster has lacked balance: not enough shooting, not enough size, not enough two-way reliability, or not enough players who can function without needing the ball.
Rui checks several of those boxes.
That is why interest from the Spurs and Nets should be taken seriously. San Antonio could view him as a strong forward fit next to Victor Wembanyama. Brooklyn could see him as a useful scoring forward with size and floor-spacing ability. If either team is willing to make an aggressive offer, the Lakers may be forced into a difficult financial decision.
But from a basketball standpoint, the argument is simple.
If the Lakers are truly building around Luka Dončić, they should not casually remove one of the few forwards who already makes sense next to him.
Not every offseason win comes from chasing a new name. Sometimes the smartest move is keeping the piece you already developed, already trusted, and already know fits your system.
Rui Hachimura may not be the loudest name in free agency, but losing him could make the Lakers’ roster-building job even harder.
