In Canada, U-190 followed a different path.

The boat had surrendered in May 1945 after operating in the western Atlantic. It had sunk the Canadian minesweeper HMCS Esquimalt only weeks before the war ended—the last Canadian warship lost to enemy action in the Second World War.

Yet U-190 was not immediately destroyed.

The Royal Canadian Navy used it for training, anti-submarine exercises, sonar development, and torpedo practice.

Canadian sailors walked through the same compartments where German submariners had once prepared attacks against Allied shipping.

U-234.

Unlike a standard combat submarine, U-234 had been converted into a long-range transport. In the final weeks of the Third Reich, it departed Europe bound for Japan.

Its cargo was extraordinary.

Advanced weapons components.

Parts connected to jet aircraft.

German specialists.

And containers marked as uranium oxide.

When Germany surrendered, U-234 was still in the Atlantic.

Its commander faced a choice.

In the closing days of the conflict, it sailed on patrol under Captain Adalbert Schnee. After receiving the ceasefire order, Schnee later claimed that he approached a British cruiser underwater, reached a position from which he could have attacked, and then withdrew without firing.

The account became famous because it seemed to prove what the Type XXI might have achieved.

A fast, quiet German submarine had allegedly slipped through an Allied screen at the very end of the war and placed itself in a killing position.

Then it obeyed the surrender order.

Whether every detail occurred exactly as later described has been debated, but the story captured Allied fears perfectly.

Germany had lost before its most dangerous submarine could fully enter the fight.

On February 7, 1946, U-2511 was scuttled.

With it, Operation Deadlight officially closed.

The paperwork suggested finality.

The reality was more complicated.

The submarines had not disappeared.

They had simply moved from history into geography.

For decades, fishermen knew there were wrecks in the waters northwest of Ireland. Nets caught on unseen metal. Sonar operators detected long shapes on the seabed. Naval charts marked obstructions without always identifying them.

Then, in the early twenty-first century, improved underwater survey technology began revealing the scale of the graveyard.

There were U-boats lying upright.

Today, U-505 stands inside the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

Its hull is dark, enormous, and carefully restored.

In Britain, U-534 survived for decades before being raised from the Kattegat in 1993. The submarine had been sunk by Allied aircraft in May 1945 under circumstances that fueled years of speculation about secret cargo.

But both tell the same story.

Power can vanish quickly.

In 1943, German commanders still believed the Wolfpack could decide the war.

By May 1945, their crews were standing beneath white flags while Allied aircraft circled overhead.

Months later, British sailors were firing into the empty hulls.

A few years after that, engineers from the victorious nations were building new submarines from lessons learned inside the defeated ones.
