Arsenal are interested in signing in-form Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez, according to L’Equipe.
The Gunners have had a fine first half to the season and they are currently top of the Premier League table as well as their Champions League group.
Despite this, there is constant speculation that the club could pursue a new striker in January and L’Equipe claim that they are keen on signing Gimenez.
Aside from the Gunners, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan and Real Madrid have also been monitoring the 22-year-old striker during the current season.
ARSENAL COULD MAKE STRIKER DECISION IN JANUARY
The Gunners are currently lacking a consistent goalscorer in the squad but they have fared well as a team.
Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah and Leandro Trossard have played up front this season. They have netted a combined 11 goals from the centre-forward role thus far.
Hence, the Gunners are not facing a desperate need for a new striker. In our opinion, a decision could be made based on the form of the trio heading into January.
If one of them gets into a rich vein of scoring form, the club’s hierarchy may decide against pursuing a marquee striker. They could wait until the season concludes.
Gimenez has already netted 18 goals in the current campaign, but we have doubts over him.
Vincent Janssen had a similar scoring run for AZ nearly a decade ago, but the Dutchman struggled to make sufficient impact after his move to Tottenham Hotspur.
He managed just six goals from 42 outings, having previously scored 31 times in 49 games for AZ.
This has been the case with several forwards coming from the Eredivisie. Hakim Ziyech and Davy Klaassen are other examples of players, who struggled to make a mark.
We would ideally prefer the club to sign a marquee midfielder in January and focus on landing an elite striker such as Victor Osimhen at the end of the campaign.
