Brazilian Jemerson, who was with the midfielder at Monaco, said Silva’s dress sense was the talk of the dressing room. The Portuguese international’s current teammate Ilkay Gundogan has previously admitted: “Bernardo always gets bullied by the team because most of the players say he dresses like a 40 or 50 year-old man, like a grandfather even sometimes.”

But he went on to praise his friend as someone “everyone likes” in a tongue-in-cheek analysis of the Premier League’s top players on ESPN called ‘Fashion Master or Disaster.””

Jemerson, currently a centre-back at French top-flight side Metz, has now confirmed Silva has always had a reputation as a bad dresser among other footballers.

He described him as a “very cool” guy in an interview but added: “People made fun of him a lot, they said he liked to wear old men’s clothes. He would always appear with shirts on that had gone out of fashion. People used to rib him a lot.”

When the 29-year-old Man City midfielder revealed earlier this month that he may attempt to leave the team in 2019 in order to make an emotional return to his childhood club, Benfica, it raised eyebrows.

I miss Portugal a lot, he said to Portuguese pay TV station Canal 11. In a year or two, if I could go back, I would. Not only do I want to play for Benfica once more, but I also really miss my family and my life in Portugal.”

Silva left Benfica in August 2014 to join Monaco, and three years later, for an estimated £43.5 million, he joined Man City. June 2026 is when his contract with The Citizens expires.

Even though Jemerson made fun of the master of the midfield’s attire, he was quite complimentary of his skills on the football field.

“In training, it was very difficult to mark him. He would dribble and when you thought you were going to win the ball, he would find a way to keep it, because he finished very well or passed,” he said.

“Also, he is very good tactically. He has an incredible vision of the game, is very skilled and gives his all for the team.”
