A Wisconsin woman has entered a no contest plea in a disturbing child neglect case involving a 14-year-old girl who was rescued in critical condition after years of alleged confinement and abuse, according to court records in Wisconsin.

Melissa Goodman, the stepmother of the victim, pleaded no contest on May 6 to charges including chronic neglect causing great bodily harm, chronic neglect causing emotional damage, and false imprisonment. She now faces up to 46 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for July 1.

The case came to light on August 21, 2025, when the girl’s father, Walter Goodman, called emergency services requesting help at their trailer, telling dispatchers that his daughter had not eaten for days and was becoming increasingly unresponsive, according to a criminal complaint.

When authorities arrived, responding officers reported that the teen appeared severely malnourished and underweight, with prominent bone structure visible and a condition described in court documents as life-threatening.

Medical records cited in the complaint show the girl was admitted to hospital suffering from multiple severe conditions, including untreated diabetes complications, acute respiratory failure, cardiac dysfunction, hepatitis, pancreatitis, hypothermia, and hypoglycemia. She reportedly weighed approximately 35 pounds at the time of rescue.

Investigators allege the child had been kept in extremely poor living conditions and showed signs of prolonged neglect. Court documents also reference messages and photos recovered from Melissa Goodman’s phone, which prosecutors say included threats and images related to the girl’s treatment.

Authorities further allege that a locking mechanism was discovered on the girl’s bedroom door, consistent with claims she had been confined for extended periods. The victim reportedly told hospital staff she believed she had not been outside to play for several years.

Both Walter Goodman and Melissa Goodman were charged in connection with the case following the investigation. The legal proceedings remain ongoing, and sentencing for Melissa Goodman is pending.
