“I hear someone got fired for bringing their child to work?” he asked.
“Yes, sir,” Olivia replied, trying to keep her voice steady.
The man looked at Max and then at Olivia. “I was that kid once,” he said softly. “Years ago, my mother brought me to her office when she had no one to watch me. And do you know what happened?”
Olivia shook her head, bewildered.
“I was given a chance. And that small act of understanding changed my life. You will not be fired. In fact, I want you to continue your work here—and I’ll make sure we support working parents like you moving forward.”
Olivia’s mouth went dry. “I… I don’t know what to say…”
“Just keep doing your job and keep taking care of your son,” he said with a reassuring smile.
