DAYCARE WORKER CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED CHILD ABUSE AFTER INFANT SUFFERS CATASTROPHIC INJURIES

Panama City, FL — A Florida daycare worker has been charged with aggravated child abuse after police say she violently assaulted a 3-month-old boy in her care, allegedly because she was upset over personal issues and a text message.

Authorities responded to HCA Florida Gulf Coast Hospital on May 13 after medical staff reported the infant arrived with a fractured skull, fractured leg, fractured ribs, and a brain bleed. Investigators say the injuries occurred earlier that day while the child was under the supervision of daycare employee LaKayla E. Hamilton.

Hamilton initially denied knowing how the child was injured. However, during a follow-up interview, police say she admitted to repeatedly slamming the infant into a crib and a changing table, squeezing and shaking him, and striking him with toys in attempts to stop him from crying. She also allegedly committed a second assault later the same day.

Police and investigators emphasized that the infant’s survival depended on the quick actions of his parents, who immediately sought medical care. Hamilton was arrested and booked into the Bay County Jail on May 14 on two counts of aggravated child abuse, with bond set at $210,000.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to contact the Bay County Sheriff’s Office.
