Mark Grossman almost joined Y&Râs sister soap.
Since 2019, Mark Grossman has been wowing fans as Adam on The Young and the Restless. But before playing Genoa Cityâs bad boy, the actor auditioned for The Bold and the Beautiful. If things had turned out differently, Grossman mightâve played this iconic B&B character.
Journey Into the Soap World
In 2019, Grossman was on the casting list for many soap operas. B&B was one of the soaps that was interested in the rising actor.
Before becoming one of The Young and the Restlessâ most recognizable stars, Mark Grossman came surprisingly close to landing a major role on The Bold and the Beautiful. According to B&B casting director Christy Dooley, Grossman auditioned for the role of Thomas Forrester and made a strong impression during the casting process.
Speaking at a recent SAG-AFTRA Foundation panel, Dooley revealed that Grossman was actually her preferred choice for the part. Ultimately, however, the role went to Matthew Atkinson. While Grossman missed out on Thomas, his breakthrough moment arrived later that same year when he was cast as Adam Newman on The Young and the Restless, stepping into a role previously played by Justin Hartley.

Y&R casting director Greg Salmon acknowledged that finding the right actor for Adam was no easy task. As Victor Newmanâs son and one of the show’s most important characters, Adam carries enormous weight in Genoa City. With several actors having portrayed the character over the years, expectations were high. In the end, Grossman successfully secured the role and went on to become a fan favorite, proving that sometimes a missed opportunity can lead to an even bigger one.
Although many actors auditioned for the part, Salmon said Grossmanâs âenergyâ made him stand out. âI remember Mark came in and read with Eric Braeden and a few other members of the Newman family. His energy was just off the charts. It felt like this is how Adam should be.â
What Couldâve Been
Grossman certainly had enormous expectations to live up to when he stepped into the role of Adam Newman, but he quickly made the character his own. His performances have earned widespread praise from viewers, and in 2020 he received a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor, cementing his status as one of daytime televisionâs standout talents.
Today, itâs difficult to picture Grossman as anyone other than Adam. Still, itâs intriguing to imagine what might have happened had he been cast as Thomas Forrester instead. Grossman has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to portray complex, flawed characters who make questionable decisions yet still manage to win over audiences. Those qualities would have made him a compelling fit within the Forrester family and placed him squarely in the middle of the ongoing tensions involving Ridge and Brooke.
His potential pairing with Hope is another fascinating what-if scenario. Grossman has developed strong on-screen chemistry with many of his leading ladies on The Young and the Restless, leading some fans to wonder whether a Thomas and Hope romance featuring Grossman and Annika Noelle could have become one of the show’s hottest couples.
Of course, things worked out differently. Grossman found a long-term home in Genoa City, where he has become synonymous with Adam Newman. At the same time, Matthew Atkinson has left his own mark on Thomas, delivering memorable performances and helping shape some of the characterâs most significant storylines. Looking back, it seems both actors ultimately ended up exactly where they were meant to be.
