In a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 turn of events, a 35-year-old teacher from Newport, Washington, has been arrested on charges of incest after allegedly engaging in sexual conduct with her two adopted teenage sons. Amber Swain, who had previously advocated for foster children, now finds herself at the center of a disturbing investigation that has left her community reeling.
Swain was taken into custody on Tuesday following a probe initiated by the Washington Department of Children, Youth and Families, which alerted the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office about possible sexual 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮 involving the two boys. Reports indicate that the investigation began on May 18, leading to forensic interviews with the alleged victims and subsequent questioning of Swain.
The Pend Oreille River School, where Swain served as both a teacher and director, is now grappling with the fallout from these allegations. During a court appearance the day after her arrest, Prosecuting Attorney Dolly Hunt requested bail set at $50,000, citing evidence that Swain may have attempted to contact one of the boys while incarcerated. Ultimately, Judge Robin McCroskey set her bail at $20,000, allowing for her release under strict conditions, including no contact with minors and regular check-ins with her legal counsel.
According to KREM-TV, one of the teens reportedly disclosed that he had a sexual relationship with Swain prior to turning 18, claiming they had sexual encounters “plenty of times,” including just two days before he spoke with authorities. Initially, Swain denied any wrongdoing but later admitted to having sexual relations with one of the boys in February, after he had reached adulthood. She reportedly suggested that her timeline might be confused.
The second alleged victim also shared with investigators that he had engaged in inappropriate contact with Swain in May, an incident that reportedly lasted only a few minutes before she intervened. Prosecutors have since requested that Swain be prohibited from contacting the teens, especially after claims emerged that she reached out to them from jail.
In response to the arrest, the Newport School District acted swiftly, placing Swain on administrative leave and restricting her from any interaction with students and staff as the legal proceedings unfold.
Swain’s case is now set to move to Pend Oreille County Superior Court, where she is expected to be arraigned on Monday. Under Washington law, the charges against her carry severe penalties, with first-degree incest classified as a felony that could result in up to a decade behind bars.
