A Florida woman has been charged with child neglect after she allegedly abandoned her three children at a hospital, blaming them for the death of their dog and telling them, “This is the last straw.”
Sandra Teague, 58, of Palm Coast, was arrested and charged with three counts of child neglect following the April 30 incident. Deputies from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) were called to AdventHealth Palm Coast after a 17-year-old boy walked into the emergency room, barefoot and wearing only socks, and told staff that his mother had dropped him and his two younger siblings off because she was upset.
The 14-year-old and 13-year-old siblings were also at the hospital when authorities arrived. The children told deputies that their mother had become “extremely upset” after the death of one of their dogs, blaming them for the loss. They reported that Teague told them, “This is the last straw,” before driving them to the hospital, yelling at them to get out of the car, and leaving them behind.
Investigators Find Alarming Living Conditions
When deputies investigated further, they discovered troubling details about the children’s living conditions. Officers found the front door area of the house to be filled with garbage, and the inside of the residence was covered in animal feces. The conditions led investigators to be deeply concerned about the children’s welfare.
A search of the home revealed a disturbing scene: 44 dogs, three pigs, a cat, and a snake were found living in the house, alongside several deceased animals kept in kennels. The animals were removed by Palm Coast Animal Control, and the Florida Department of Children and Families was contacted to assist with the case.
Teague Arrested and Held Without Bond
Teague was located at her residence and arrested shortly after the incident. Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly expressed outrage over the conditions, saying, “No child should ever have to live in these disgusting conditions or be treated like this.”
Teague was taken to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where she is being held without bond. The FCSO noted that the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be forthcoming.
This heartbreaking case has highlighted the extreme neglect suffered by the children and the shocking conditions in which they were forced to live. The community and authorities are continuing to ensure the children receive the care and support they need.
