A heartbreaking tragedy in Florida has left a family grieving the loss of a promising young woman after authorities say an allegedly intoxicated driver traveling the wrong way on Interstate 75 caused a fatal collision.
Twenty-one-year-old Lauryn Akey, a recent graduate of the University of South Florida, was returning home from a wedding celebration during the early morning hours of May 17 when the crash occurred.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a vehicle driven by 53-year-old Dennis Lee Olson allegedly made an improper U-turn and entered oncoming traffic, colliding with Akey’s vehicle and another car on Interstate 75 in Charlotte County.
Akey died as a result of the crash.
Investigators allege Olson was operating his vehicle while impaired and later recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.222 — nearly three times Florida’s legal limit for drivers.
Court records show Olson has been charged with offenses including DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide.
During a recent court appearance, a judge ordered that Olson remain in custody without bond as the criminal case moves forward. Local reports indicate his arraignment is scheduled for June 15.
